peace begins on the inside

On December 10th, 1948, with the atrocities of WW2's genocide a recent memory, the United Nations adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.  For years many Moksha studios celebrated this day with a candle-lit class.  This year, in solidarity with Occupy movements around the world Moksha Studios take this silent candle a step further with our first community-wide human rights awareness campaign.

Restorative Justice
Yoga means unity.  We practice and feel the unity of our body and mind, unity between our lives as individuals and our the lives of our family, unity in our use of a paper wrapped product and the forests that give us clean air to breath.  Restorative justice unifies victims of crime with individuals who have committed crimes.  Most young offenders have usually been exposed to violent behaviors, many times.  Although victims of all levels of crime feel violated by criminals, 'criminals' especially young criminals have often been violated by systemic poverty, gang violence, and trauma.  Part of our 7th pillar in Moksha - Be Peace - is remembering that part of peace is finding new ways to be compassionate every day.  Facing that as a challenge, just as we face a warrior 2 as a challenge on our mat, is our way of giving through December and January.

Human Rights & New Leaf Yoga Foundation
With the signing of the Universal Declaration on Human Rights the world committed to answering the questions around what rights and freedoms we have as human beings.  New Leaf Yoga Foundation stands up for human rights every day by including those who have been left out, marginalized or too-often forgotten.  Many incarcerated youth have faced hardships that many of us can hardly imagine.  The government's response to their crimes are often harsher sentences.  In Moksha sanghas, we pick up each other's mats, we are quiet in the yoga room, we speak out for injustice at the workplace or for family and friends.  Human Rights advocacy allows us to open our hearts a bit wider so that this practice extends into the parts of our cities that are often forgotten.  Be the Change.  Speak Your Peace.
